An aluminum alloy is a composition consisting mainly of aluminum to which other elements have been added. The alloy is made by mixing together the elements when aluminum is molten (liquid), which cools to form a homogeneous solid solution. The other elements may make up as much as 15 percent of the alloy by mass. Added elements include iron, copper, magnesium, silicon, and zinc. The addition of elements to the aluminum gives the alloy improved strength, workability, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and/or density, compared with the pure metallic element. Aluminum alloys tend to be lightweight and corrosion resistant.
Identifying Aluminium Alloys
Alloys have common names , but they may be identified using a four-digit number.
The first digit of the number identifies the class / series of the Aluminium Alloys
- 1xxx - Commercially Pure Aluminium , which made of 99% or higher purity of Aluminium
- 2xxx (Aluminium 2024 AL2024) - The principal alloying element is Copper. It is strong and tough, but not corrosion resistant as other Aluminium Alloys, so they are usually use for painting and coating.
- 3xxx (Aluminium 3003 AL3003 , Aluminium 3004 AL3004) - The principal alloying element is Manganese. Normally Aluminium 3003 is used to make cooking utensils , while Aluminium 3004 will be used for aluminium cans beverages.
- 4xxx (Aluminium 4043 AL4043) - The principal alloying element is Silicon. It is mostly used for making welding wire
- 5xxx (Aluminium 5182 AL5182) - The principal alloying element is Magnesium. Aluminium 5182 is strong, weldable and resist marine corrosion.
- 6xxx (Aluminium 6061 AL6061) - The main alloying elements are Silicon & Magnesium. Aluminium 6061 has good corrosion resistance and moderate strength. Architecture and design of Iphone 6 are from Aluminium 6xxx Alloys.
- 7xxx (Aluminium 7075 AL7075) - The principal alloying element is Zinc. Aluminium 7075 is heat-treatable and very strong, used to construct Aircraft.
